Who we visited
Total Bonjour, Surbiton, Surrey
Nisa, Woodford, Manchester
Midlands Co-op Measham, Derbyshire
Londis Surbiton, Surrey
Tesco Express, Clifton, Bristol
How they performed
Our shoppers were greeted by a raft of promotions and tempting special offers this week. The Midlands Co-op was leading the way in terms of volume of promotions with four multibuys including two for £7.00 on a four-pack of Stella, two for £1.40 on its cheapest branded white loaf, two for £5.00 on packs of bacon, and five for £4.00 on cans of Whiskas catfood. It also provided the cheapest full 10 item shopping basket.
The Total Bonjour forecourt also put in a strong performance in terms of availability, providing everything on our list.
Nisa's Woodford store was offering 50% extra free on Tetley tea bags and a buy-four-for-£1.20 deal on single Mars bars. However, the cheapest branded loaf that our shopper could find was £1.13 - the most expensive on our list.
And while Londis' Maple Road store in Surbiton does not stock Stella in 440ml cans, our shopper said it had a plentiful supply of 500ml cans, which it was offering at eight for £7.00. The store also had a bogof on its 6-rasher packs of unsmoked back bacon.
The price of a single Mars bar varied wildly at the five stores visited this week. The most expensive could be found at Tesco Express for 42p, while the same item could be found 8p cheaper at Total Bonjour's Surbiton store.
Meanwhile, at just £4.18, Tesco Express' Clifton store in Bristol had the lowest price for Stella Artois - which was 16p cheaper than it was in Tesco Express' Wellingborough store in Northamptonshire visited last week. Clifton does not sell Tetley tea bags, and only stocks bacon in an 8-rasher pack. It also had the cheapest price for Whiskas catfood.
