Treasury Wine Estates has confirmed with “deep sadness” that its European managing director Dan Townsend has passed away, aged 53.
The company, for whom Townsend worked for the past six years, paid tribute to the “highly regarded and respected” leader who was both “inspirational and much loved” in a statement released today.
Townsend worked in the drinks industry for 30 years, holding various roles across different channels and categories, including with Scottish Courage, Matthew Clark, Constellation Europe and Louis Latour, before joining Treasury Wine Estates.
He also spent time as chairman of drinks industry charity The Benevolent, helping raise funds for members of the trade in need of support.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Dan’s family and loved ones,” said Treasury Wine Estates CEO Michael Clarke. “Dan is a big part of our business and he has been a role model for many. This is an incredibly sad time for our entire business, in particular for our UK and European teams.”
