New from Anglia Oils is Pietro Coricelli, a premium Tuscan extra virgin olive oil with the PGI endorsement [Protected Geographical Indication] guaranteeing the olives are picked and processed in the Tuscan area.
The company has also relaunched its butter substitute Buttachef with new packaging that includes recipe ideas. Made from vegetable oil with a butter flavouring, it is approved by the Vegetarian Society as a healthier alternative to butter.
l Oil sprays have always been the slimmer's friend, and Morehands' FryLight brand has scooped slimming organisations' awards for the past four years. The company says sunflower and extra virgin olive oil varieties have the patented one calorie per spray feature, and new varieties are in the pipeline.
l The speciality oil sector is worth £7.3m, up 2.7% year on year [TNS]. Merchant Gourmet attributes this growth to UK consumers becoming increasingly more experimental. It says its 10-strong range of oils, including five infused extra virgin olive oils, has shown sales increases of more than 40% in the last year.
l Celebrity chefs' use of olive oil has led KTC (Edibles) to introduce two new foodservice lines in four litre cans, plus three new sizes of extra virgin olive oil in 12 x 250ml, 12 x 500ml and 6 x 1-litre under the Romano label.
The company has also launched a pump to remove oil from a 20 litre metal drum. This will be available in the autumn under the Pyramid label via Simtom Foods of Leicester. New methods of merchandising retail packs of olive oil are also in the pipeline.
l Last year's health scare about Spanish pomace olive oil hasn't put off other European brands offering pomace as a healthy alternative to other frying oils. RH Amar is currently distributing the Italian brand Roma in the UK, while Niko Fine Foods is marketing pomace under the La Pedriza label.
l Elegant packaging, high quality oils and premium pricing have helped sales of San Leandro extra virgin olive oils from Andalucia to increase sales by more than 30%. Standard retails at £3.69 while organic has an rsp of £4.89. Both are available from Sainsbury and Waitrose.
