Family-owned retailer Tuffins has launched a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles with its sister company Montgomery Waters.
A reverse vending machine is on trial in the flagship Craven Arms store in Shropshire this week, with potential for the scheme to be rolled out across the Tuffins estate next year.
Customers can return any plastic soft drinks bottle between 500ml and three litres bought in store. All the recycled PET bottles will be used by Montgomery Waters, which, like Tuffins, is owned by the Delves family, to produce water for the likes of Spar and Co-op, as well as its own brands, including Stretton Hills, Celtic Spring and AquaVit.
Tuffins will donate £100 to local schools for every 2,000 bottles collected.
Montgomery is also launching its first 100% recycled eco-bottle in November under the Stretton Hills brand, with a one-litre bottle set to be stocked in store and sent to customers.
Tuffins MD Paul Delves said: “We are doing everything we can to recycle what we sell and make it into new bottles. It is closing the loop, as well as giving back to the community.”
