Tulip International is to close its Wellingborough cooked sliced meat factory. Production will be transferred to Kings Lynn and Brøndby, in Denmark.
The move is a setback for added value meat lines. Output is 80 tonnes a week of retail product British pigmeat, imported chicken and some Brazilian corned beef are all packed at Wellingborough.
The move is seen as part of Danish Crown's consolidation after the 1998 merger with Vestjyske. "Although we looked very hard at ways to save the Wellinborough site, it just wasn't viable in the long term," said Tulip International md Peter Rasztar.
