The inventor of the Tunnock’s Teacake has been knighted in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
Boyd Tunnock came up with the idea for the now-world famous teacake in 1956 and remains in charge of the company at 86. He is the grandson of the biscuit manufacturer’s founder Thomas Tunnock.
“When you get to my age, very few things surprise you but this certainly did and I am deeply honoured and grateful to Her Majesty the Queen,” said Tunnock.
He was one of a host of well-known grocery industry figures to be recognised this weekend.
Action on Salt chairman professor Graham MacGregor was awarded a CBE for services to help prevent cardiovascular disease.
There was also an MBE for Bidfood’s long-serving group sales and marketing director Dr Andrew Kemp. The award is in recognition of his outstanding services to the foodservice and hospitality industry.
“I am both proud and delighted to be a recipient of this prestigious award,” said Kemp. “It’s a great honour to work in such an incredible industry alongside many influential and wonderful people.”
Lincolnshire Co-op chief executive Ursula Lidbetter was made an OBE for her services to the local economy after 15 years at the helm of one of the largest employers in the area, while there were also OBEs for Tesco Clubcard pioneers Edwina Dunn and Clive Humby. Dunn is currently CEO of data consultancy Starcount with Humby as chief data scientist. They sold their original Dunnhumby consultancy to Tesco in 2008.
