US meat company Tyson Foods is to remove trans-fat ingredients from some of its packaged foods such as burgers and chicken nuggets due to the demands of growing numbers of health-conscious consumers.

Trans-fats give products a longer shelf life, but medical experts believe they are harmful to the heart.

Last year, the US government last year laid down new regulations for all packaged foods to carry labels noting the levels of trans-fats they contain.

Tyson said removing trans-fats would take three months and that the new products would be in supermarkets by late spring and early summer.
