Haldanes has opened its first Ugo discount supermarket, in Stoke-on-Trent.
The opening follows Haldanes' purchase of 20 Netto stores from Asda last month. The store previously operated under the Haldanes fascia and is being trialled ahead of the opening of 20 stores by the end of April.
Chairman Arthur Harris said the store had been chosen to trial the format to fight the opening of a new Sainsbury's supermarket in the town. "Since we opened in Biddulph a year ago, the town and district councils have given planning permission for Sainsbury's to come in," he said. "It put our store and our employees' jobs in great danger, so we've decided to fight back and convert to our Ugo fascia."
The store has a full grocery offer and kicked off with a number of deep discounted deals. An extensive non-food range has also been added.
