One of the biggest importers of liquid egg into the UK, UK Egg Centre, has reassured customers that all the eggs it imports from the Continent will be compliant with new EU battery cage ban rules by 1 November two months before they are enforced.
The media has been full of stories about the dangers of so-called ‘illegal’ eggs coming in from the Continent, but UK Egg Centre had worked closely with its Dutch processing partners to ensure they were compliant ahead of the 1 January 2012 deadline, said commercial director David Edney. UK Egg Centre supplies boiled and liquid egg to UK manufacturers. Most of its eggs are sourced from The Netherlands, with some coming from Ireland.
During British Egg Week last week, Compassion in World Farming launched a new broadside against caged eggs, with a web video showing people in cages.
