A film-maker has teamed up with Hi-Spirits to launch a vodka and revive his great-grandfather's Ukrainian distillery, which was seized in the Russian Revolution.
Twenty percent of Zorokovich 1917's net profit (rsp: £29.95) will go back to the Ukrainian village where it is made, creating jobs, community projects and improving infrastructure.
The "social enterprise" vodka would focus initially on building presence in the off-trade, by using founder Dan Edelstyn's story as a unique point of difference, said marketing director at Hi-Spirits Mark Unsworth.
Edelstyn made a film about discovering the distillery. It will be shown at international film festivals and on More4 in the spring.
"Vodka as a category is so undifferentiated," said Unsworth. "But Dan's talking about the provenance and story behind it. No other brands are doing that."
Zorokovich 1917 is stocked in Selfridges.
