The head of United Co-op's food group, Paul Griffiths, has left after six years with the society and is currently evaluating opportunities within the food sector.
Griffiths said he had been with the co-op for six years during a period of significant change and progress. The business was now in a good shape, and he felt the time was right to move one.
"There are changes going on in the food industry which will create some interesting opportunities, and I want to make sure I am available to take advantage of this," he said.
United's chief executive Peter Marks thanked Griffiths for the important contribution he had made to the business and wished him success for the future.
In his six years as general manager of the food group, Griffiths led the transformation of United's food business from one predominantly dependent on large stores to the leading c-store operator in its region.
Griffiths was also in charge of the roll out of the blue and aqua Late Shop livery to its entire 350 c-store estate, he managed the transfer of United's buying function to the CRTG buying group, and had recently been in charge of the integration of another 120 stores following the merger with the Yorkshire Co-op.
Prior to working at United, Griffiths was a divisional director on Asda's trading board. He also had spells at Tulip International and Danepak and was chairman of the Provision Trade Federation.
