Japan Tobacco International has launched a new ‘18+ toolkit’ specifically designed to support vape shops in preventing underage sales of e-cigarettes.
The toolkit includes a booklet on how to train staff, a sellers’ guide, warning poster and window sticker for in-store display.
According to JTI the market has seen strong growth, with over two million adults in the UK currently using e-cigarettes.
“We all know that children shouldn’t be able to buy vaping products, but it’s essential to put robust systems in place and train your staff if retailers are serious about preventing it,” said Tom Hirons, senior government relations and emerging products manager at JTI.
“This toolkit gives advice to support vape shops who are on the frontline in preventing the underage sale of these products.”
The detailed toolkit was developed by JTI, working in conjunction with former trading standards officer Tony Allen from social enterprise Under Age Sales.
“With the market for e-cigarettes increasing and healthy profit margins posing a lucrative sales opportunity, it’s vital for retailers to remain aware of the risks of selling such products to anyone underage and ensure they are complying with the applicable laws,” said Allen.
“The development of this toolkit comes at a very important time and the proactive step taken by JTI to support retailers with a toolkit containing essential information - the first of its kind in the UK for vape products - will prove to be a valuable tool for vape store retailers.”
