Waitrose is hoping to entice beer lovers to its deli aisle with a cheese made with ale.
Duvel Belgian Beer Cheese, made with raw cows milk by cheesemaker Michael van Tricht, joined the retailer’s cheese portfolio this week as part of its premium Waitrose 1 range (rsp: £28.99 per kg).
To give the cheese a “distinct hop character”, Duvel beer - brewed in Belgium for more than 100 years - is added to the vats.
Waitrose, which claims to have the widest variety of cheese available in any UK supermarket, predicted the NPD would be “a hit with beer lovers”.
“We spend our time finding cheesemakers, from all over the world, who can supply our customers with the tastiest and most unique cheeses around,” said cheese buyer Chris Dawson.
