Waitrose is three years ahead of targets set by the government to reduce salt levels in food.
Its announcement coincides with Salt Awareness Week, which starts tomorrow (January 29). FSA chair Deirdre Hutton and public health minister Caroline Flint will speak at a conference on Wednesday on the progress made by the industry to meet the government’s timetable for reducing salt intake to 6g a day.
By 2007, Waitrose said it would have met the challenge laid out by government, ahead of its 2010 deadline.
