Waitrose has signed a new export deal with French supermarket chain Auchan to sell its products in Portugal.
A range of 100 Waitrose products went on sale in six Auchan stores in Lisbon and across the Algarve this week.
The range, which includes everything from ginger beer to organic strawberry preserve and mature Cheddar, is aimed primarily at British holidaymakers and expats.
“We are excited to be continuing our expansion throughout Europe by bringing Waitrose products to Portugal, an incredibly popular destination with British holiday makers and expats, alike,” said David Morton, Waitrose’s business to business director.
In 2013, Waitrose grew its export sales by almost 30%. It said the most popular export products included Waitrose teabags and marmalade.
As well as exporting its own products, Waitrose announced last month that it would export branded products from SMEs. Brands now working with Waitrose include Cornish Sea Salt and Doves Farm Organic.
Waitrose now exports to more than 50 countries in every continent of the world, from Chile and the Caribbean to South Korea and Taiwan. Waitrose products are also available on all Eurostar trains.
