Waitrose is claiming a UK supermarket first by stocking environmentally-friendly alternatives to plastic-based sandwich wrap.
The upmarket retailer will stock Bee’s Wrap reusable food wraps and paper sandwich and snack bags from If You Care in its stores from this week.
The reusable food wraps come in three varieties: a three-pack of wraps for sandwiches or snacks (rsp: £19.99), sandwich wrap (rsp: £14.99) and wrap for bread (rsp: £14.99). The wraps are made from organic cloth treated with beeswax, tree resin and organic jojoba oil, which means they can be washed and reused for up to a year.

The greaseproof paper bags (rsp: £3.99), meanwhile, are Forest Stewardship Council certified, chlorine-free and certified home compostable. They are also packaged in a cardboard box, and each packet contains 48 microwave-safe bags.
Both the Bee’s Wrap sandwich wrap and If You Care greaseproof paper bags are on an introductory offer until 30 September at £11.24 and £2.99 respectively.
Waitrose said the aim was to help customers who wish to move away from plastic bags and cling film to more environmentally-friendly lunches and snacks. “We know our customers care about the environment and we want to offer them sustainable food storage choices,” said Waitrose bags and wraps buyer Amy Glover. “These reusable wraps and food bags will help customers do that.”
