Waitrose is withdrawing a free newspaper offer for loyalty scheme members, while promising an alternative.
The supermarket has told myWaitrose members the newspaper offer will end on 22 February, but it is “replacing it with something new”.
All myWaitrose customers can currently get a free national newspaper when they spend more than £10 in store.
Shoppers should “look out for updates in the coming weeks”, Waitrose said in an email to loyalty members.
“We’re improving the myWaitrose programme to offer customers personalised discounts on the products they buy most,” a Waitrose spokeswoman said.
“While the newspaper offer was enjoyed by some of our customers, in reality it was only being used by around 5% of members. The new approach will mean that all members can make greater savings by receiving benefits tailored to them.”
The scheme will offer personalised discounts on items customers buy most, the supermarket said. Benefits aside from the newspaper will continue, including a dry-cleaning discount, free Waitrose Food and Health magazines, Cookery School Discount and cash back for Vitality customers.
The move follows the supermarket’s decision to suspend its free tea and coffee offer, which was one of the key planks of its loyalty programme, during the pandemic. Waitrose said it was currently still considering whether to bring the popular freebie back.
