Waitrose was named most responsible multiple grocer at the first Responsible Drinks Retailing Awards this week.
The company was praised for making it easy for customers to understand the unit content of alcoholic drinks, recommended daily limits and age restrictions for purchasing.
Last month it was the first supermarket chain to introduce shelf barkers featuring this information.
Head of beers, wines & spirits buying, Derek Strange, said the awards showed how industry was leading, rather than just reacting to government, when it came to responsible retailing.
Bells Stores just pipped Jacksons to take the award for most responsible multiple convenience retailer while Bargain Booze was judged most responsible off-licence chain.
Thresher was highly commended. Birmingham’s Rai Wine was judged the most responsible independent off-licence.
The awards were staged by Morning Advertiser and Off-Licence News, both produced by William Reed, publisher of The Grocer.
Constellation Europe, Diageo, Ernst & Young, Guy Simmonds, Lucozade and Scottish Courage were the sponsors.
