What delights have you been missing out on in Madagascar, Korea and Malaysia, wonders Lisa Riley
The Asian and African section at IFE05, which forms part of the new international section Walk the World, promises lots of excitement and inspiration with a mix of companies from as far afield as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and India taking part.
And, as well as a plethora of returning countries that regularly come to promote their wares, this year there will also be newcomers such as Tunisia and ‘the island continent’ Madagascar.
Tiko International, which supports Madagascar’s ‘trade not aid’ approach to its economy, will be flying the flag for one of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean.
It will showcase an impressive line-up of fine and healthy foods including fine chocolate, honey, herbs and spices and a selection of teas and coffees.
“Madagascar has so much to offer the British food industry. Consumer demand for fairly traded products is at an all-time high and increasing year-on-year,” says Neil Kelsall, director of sales. "
Tiko International, a joint venture between Tiko Madagascar and Noetic Associates in the UK, is hoping to entice visitors to its stand with the help of a group of native dancers who will entertain with local music and moves.
Furthermore, the company will use IFE05 as a launch pad for its new of range of fine foods - Malagasy - from the island.
“Local produce for the Malagasy brand is not only harvested in Madagascar but is both processed and prepared to international requirements within the country,” says Kelsall.
For the first time in the history of IFE, an Indian pavilion is being organised by APEDA with active support from the government of India. The product display in the Indian pavilion will be in line with the region’s diversity. Seafood products, spices and cardamom, as well as other Indian food products, will be showcased at the Indian pavilion by a number of government bodies.
As well as this, many exhibitors have taken individual booths to show off their products.
Elsewhere at the Asian/African section, South Korea hopes to make an impact on the lucrative UK food and drink import market.
Korea Foods’ stand will feature a host of exotic new products aimed at capturing the imagination of everyone who is interested in Asia-Pacific cuisine.
Visitors will be able to sample a selection of traditional Korean sweet and savoury snacks including Gosomi sesame seed biscuits, shrimp crackers and pumpkin and rice snacks.
A focal point of the stand will be the Sen Health range of herbal teas and blended fruit juices. On top of this, there will also be a free prize draw giving the winner and their guest the chance to sample Korean food at its best with a meal for two at the company’s Kaya restaurant. Malaysia, a country where food is not merely an excuse for a social gathering but a living testament to the country’s unique fusion of cultures including Malay, Chinese and Indian, will be represented by no fewer than 14 companies.
And, close at hand to the Malaysian Pavilion will be Dine at Malaysia - one of the three Dine@IFE cutting-edge restaurants.
With a new menu for each day of the show, visitors to the eatery are given the opportunity to experience the unique culinary delights of Malaysian taste.
Chef Zam, who is currently a chef lecturer at London’s Thames Valley University, will be cooking and preparing the dishes available in the restaurant.
The menu includes rice braised in coconut milk and squid in spicy chilli sauce for breakfast.
Dinner options will vary from simple steamed white rice to more exotic options such as grilled chicken basted with spiced coconut gravy.
Lunch and dessert options will also be featured.
