PepsiCo is looking at making Walkers crisp packets from potato skins, the company's UK boss has revealed.
The starch waste from recycled potato peelings could be manufactured into eco-friendly, biodegradable packaging for crisps.
Richard Evans, president of PepsiCo UK, told BBC Radio the company had already created crisp bags made from cellulose from wood pulp but hoped to make packets out of peelings within the next year and a half.
“In reality, if you think about how sticky starch is, you could mass it together and create a layer of starch and stabilise that,” said Evans. “We could use the peelings we have, that today go to animal feed and other recycling uses to be turned into a crisp packets.”
