Walmart has claimed that a rollout of new ceiling lighting fixtures in its supermarkets will reduce energy consumption by up to 40% per store.
The new energy-efficient LED fixtures - part of the retailer’s drive to reduce the kilowatt hour (kWh) per square foot of energy required to power its stores by 20% globally by 2020 - will go into 157 Walmart stores worldwide in 2014. This will include 10 new Asda stores, which the company said would result in annual savings of over £20,000 per store.
“We have worked to find and scale energy-efficient LED lighting solutions that are cost-effective and high quality, and we’re paving the way to make this a mainstream solution for the retail industry,” said Walmart president Doug McMillon. “LEDs have become an integral part of our energy efficiency model for our stores and play a key role in achieving our overall sustainability goals. Just as important, the energy cost savings coming from these innovations will help us maintain the low prices our customers depend on us to provide.”
Walmart said it expected to convert all of the lighting in its global distribution centres to LED by 2016.
