Craft-brewed fermented water kefir producer Agua de Madre has turned to the crowd as it aims to take on the low & no UK drinks market.
The startup, which launched its low-alcohol water kefir in September, is looking to raise £250k on Crowdcube in exchange for a 13% stake – valuing the brand at £1.8m.
With just over a week left on the campaign, Agua de Madre has raised over £154k from 157 investors.
The brand had previously secured £500k from an angel investor to launch, build its fermentary and scale up capacity.
“We are crowdfunding to get more people involved in the brand, join our familia and spread the word,” founder Nicola Hart said.
“To get a drinks brand to market properly you need to have a lot of lovely people supporting you, which is why we want to get more madres and padres involved.”
Agua de Madre will use the cash to cover sales and marketing expenses, as well as to hire more key salespeople.
The brand’s naturally low-alcohol and low-sugar water kefir is currently available in several London restaurants – including Moro, Pomona and Granger & Co – as well as being stocked by Farmdrop and Planet Organic.
Conversations are also ongoing with other larger retailers with a view of securing future listings, Hart added.
Agua de Madre forecasts sales of around £67k for the year to April 2020, rising to £537k in 2021 and skyrocketing to £1.5m by 2022.
