The Co-operative Group is claiming to be the first major UK retailer to stock peat-free salad cress. In an effort to conserve Britain’s vanishing peat bogs, a key wildlife habitat, the retailer’s salad cress is now grown on pesticide-free cellulose matting made from 100% biodegradable material, instead of in peat-lined punnets.
The multiple said it was adopting a responsible retailing commitment after 64% of consumers indicated last May that they felt this was important. The containers are also “less messy”.
The cress is grown by Lancashire-based Ingle’s Dawndew Salad. It retails at 35p a punnet.
