The government blamed Britain’s otter population for devastating fish numbers in the nation’s rivers.

Angling clubs and fish farms faced going out of business due to depleted fish stocks, according to Labour’s angling spokesman, Martin Salter.

He said there was an insufficient quantity of food in the country’s waterways to sustain the burgeoning otter population, leading the aquatic mammals to stray into fisheries to find sustenance.

Salter blamed conservationist groups for releasing otters into the wild without bearing in mind the consequences.

“They have been released into an environment where there is an imbalance between predator and prey,” Salter fumed.
