Producer body Dairy UK has questioned the government's decision to restrict school milk to skim and semi-skimmed.
Some in the dairy industry are outraged that whole milk is being put in the same box as junk food.
Jim Paice, Conservative farming spokesman, said: "I am all in favour of children having a healthy diet, but whole milk is 97% fat-free."
Skimmed and semi-skimmed milks have marginally more calcium than whole milk, but the nutritional benefits of whole milk are valuable, said Dairy UK. Dr Ed Komorowski, technical director, said: "We think that children should be allowed to choose the milk they prefer, and whole milk should be included.
