A Sainsbury distribution depot in East Kilbride is to use a wind turbine to generate up to 40% of its energy needs.
The trial is part of the multiple's investigation into making renewable energy a bigger proportion of its electricity source. Its flagship Greenwich store already uses wind and solar power.
The wind power will cost the same as conventional electricity initially but this should fall.
Sainsbury director Ian Coull said: "The scheme is quiet and highly efficient and will enable us to investigate wind generated electricity without relying on government subsidy or paying extra."
