A new app designed to help consumers buy acclaimed wine online is using daily pricing data from retailers including Tesco and Asda.
The Find A Vino app, which only lists wines that have either won awards or been reviewed by a professional critic, currently carries details of about 600 products but is adding more daily. Consumers can search participating retailers’ ranges for a wine by colour, country, grape and price, and click through to their websites to buy direct, or use in store.
The app was launched this week by wine tasting business and online retailer ThirtyFifty, and software consultancy partner Microsap. Commission is taken on every purchase made after clicking through to a retailer’s website.
Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Majestic had agreed to provide their data through third-party affiliates, said ThirtyFifty, and Waitrose Cellar, Laithwaites and The Drink Shop were set to join. ThriftyFifty said it was hoping to get Morrisons, which pulled out after amalgamating its wine and grocery sites, and Sainsbury’s involved. It is also planning to start scraping sites from the autumn to allow it to add more retailers, including the discounters.
ThirtyFifty co-founder Chris Scott said the app would give consumers greater confidence to buy off-promotion. “The retailers have great wines chosen by great teams but there is so much noise at fixture consumers can’t find the hidden gems,” he said.
Find A Vino carries awards information from the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and will start listing winners of the International Wine Challenge, organised by The Grocer publisher William Reed Business Media, from next month.
The app is available for iOS (rsp: £1.49), and an Android version is planned for this year.
