Leading oriental wholesaler Wing Yip has launched a nationwide search to find the finest young oriental cuisine chef.
For the second year in a row, the wholesaler is looking for the most promising oriental chefs employed in the hospitality industry or training at college or university.
Applicants must be aged between 18 and 25 years old and must demonstrate a flair for oriental cuisine for a chance to win the accolade of Wing Yip’s Young Chef of the Year 2014.
“We want to celebrate the rich vein of young culinary talent in the UK,” said Wing Yip chairman Wing Yip.
Successful entrants will be required to create an oriental menu using ingredients of their choice and will have a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hong Kong.
Finalists will be put through their paces by a panel of judges including TV chef Ching He Huang, Michelin-starred Birmingham chef Glynn Purnell, and British Culinary Federation president Peter Griffith.
“This is the second year the competition has run,” said Peter Griffith. “Last year we were incredibly impressed by the use of flavours, presentation and creativity in the finalists’ dishes. It has certainly set the standard for this year and we are very much looking forward to seeing what this year’s chefs have to offer.”
Entries must be received by 10 January and a competitive cook-off will take place at University College Birmingham on 21 February.
