Britons are increasingly opting for wraps instead of sandwiches, according to industry research.

Statistics released by Tesco show that its egg and cress sandwich, which has been the most popular lunchtime snack for years, has been overtaken by sales of the American-style chicken caesar salad wrap.

But the sandwich is still a popular purchase for the British public, and according to the British Sandwich Association around 2,432 million sandwiches are sold each year. Tesco, the biggest seller of sandwiches in Britain, sells 2.2million a week.

The wrap, a Mexican tortilla made from flour and water, which is considered to be a healthier alternative to the sandwich, now accounts for 18% of the sandwich market.
