UK-grown tomatoes will be available in Asda all year round after the opening of a new facility next month.
Yorkshire-based Mill Nurseries, grower for dedicated Asda supplier English Village Salads, is set to open a four-acre greenhouse growing round and sweet plum varieties throughout the winter in addition to its standard crops.
The first harvest will be in late September when the tomatoes are set to reach Asda.
Director Rob de Lang, who runs the family business, said this year-round production was a first for UK tomato crops. The
main advantage will be improved quality, avoiding the need for southern European winter-grown tomatoes which often had a long shelf life or thick skin, he added.
“From September we will be harvest continuously to July when we will plant a new crop. This will tie in to get full continuity.”
