Plans for a new Tesco in the Yorkshire town of Driffield have been delayed after a judicial review into planning consent was called.
East Riding Council, which gave the planning consent, is due to defend the decision at Leeds Administrative Court next month.
Civic leaders say delays will damage the market town’s economy, but Driffield Cattle Market Company, whose redevelopment plans for the town’s derelict cattle market include a superstore, is challenging permission for the new Tesco. Aldi, which was given planning permission for a supermarket in the town, has listed itself as an interested party in the case.
Planning permission for the new Tesco, which will be more than double the size of the existing outlet, was granted in March 2008.
