Tesco has set up an advisory panel of some of its brightest young employees as part of its pledge to boost career opportunities for those starting out in the industry.
The Young People’s Panel, which consists of a dozen people from across the business aged from 18 to 25, will advise Tesco on ways it can step up support for youngsters.
Its creation follows the launch last May of Tesco’s Using our Scale for Good report, which included a core pledge to launch new training and apprenticeship programmes to help “hundreds of thousands” of young people start their careers.
The panel will meet four times a year.
The youngest member on the panel is 18-year old Harvey Mallett, a trainee working as a manager at a Tesco forecourt in Newmarket.
“I have a great passion to develop within Tesco and I am excited to be part of the Young People’s Panel,” he said. “I cannot wait to meet the other colleagues in our Young People’s Panel and have the chance to share my ideas and views.”
The employee from furthest afield is 23-year-old Taiwo Omisore, an electrical buyer working in Central Europe and Turkey. “I am looking forward to helping young people from all backgrounds to be aware of opportunities within the business and help them flourish,” he said.
A Tesco spokesman added: “We have set out an ambition to create millions of new opportunities for young people in the communities we serve. We will do this by inspiring, equipping and enabling them to start successful careers, whatever they decide to do.”
