Young’s Seafood has added a marine biologist to its CSR team for the first time in a bid to bolster its sustainability expertise.
David Parker, who was previously a fisheries officer at the Marine Conservation Society, joined Young’s this week. The company is thought to be the first major seafood processor to create a specific marine biologist role within the organisation.
Parker’s responsibilities will include researching emerging sources of fish and seafood for new products, working with fishermen and advising customers on how to improve their sustainable fish offer. He will also play a leading role in Young’s Fish for Life CSR programme.
“We believe that success is about doing the right thing now and for generations to come,” said chief executive, Leendert den Hollander. “Appointing a marine biologist further demonstrates our commitment to this agenda.”
The new role was a great opportunity to make a difference and take supplying sustainable fish to the next level, added Parker. “I can’t wait to get out on the water and work with fishermen, fish farmers and customers.”
Prior to his job at the MCS, Parker was marine policy officer at the WWF. He holds a degree in marine biology and an MSC in environmental biology. He will sit within the company’s CSR team, led by director of quality and corporate social responsibility, Mike Mitchell.
