Zuber Issa is opening a new non-forecourt store concept called Euro Grocers.
It is a venture Issa is embarking on independently from the wider EG Group or Asda, which he bought along with his brother Mohsin and TDR Capital last year.
Issa is opening Euro Grocers on a site he acquired from a commercial business that had closed down in his hometown of Blackburn, The Grocer understands.
The 6,000 sq ft urban convenience store, or mini-supermarket, will have a strong focus on fresh and frozen staple groceries. It has not yet been confirmed who will be supplying the store.
There will also be an on-site butchery, fishmonger and an Ambala concession that serves Indian sweets and savouries, plus specialist items like vape products.
It is still in the early phase of design and development and an opening date is to be confirmed. Depending on the success of the trial, more sites could be opened.
The Grocer first learned about the move from a job advert, spotted by retail analyst Bryan Roberts, which stated it was “excited to bring a new and convenient concept into the local community of Blackburn”.
It said it was looking for a “skilled and knowledgeable” fishmonger who will be responsible for the operations of the seafood department.
“This is the perfect opportunity to join us and help us welcome our new Euro Grocers to the local community,” the advert said.
