Ocado is looking for satellite distribution centres in the south and a second main depot in the north as demand takes off, according to joint MD Roger Whiteside.
The Waitrose supplied online shopping service is now taking up to 5,000 orders a week, and has already opened its first satellite depot in Brooklands, near Weybridge in Surrey.
Pods which fit on to Ocado delivery vans are taken by truck in batches of six from Ocado's central distribution centre in Hatfield to the satellite centre, and then sent out by van.
Whiteside said Ocado planned to open a second satellite distribution centre in the south east in the spring, which will serve Kent. That will be followed by further satellite depots along the A1 and M1 towards Milton Keynes.
Ocado plans to open a second major depot in the north when it has completed a roll out up to Birmingham through the satellite distribution method. Whiteside said Ocado was looking at conurbations including Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh for this warehouse. And an Ocado launch poster and radio advertising campaign in London has now been completed. Whiteside said: "It has definitely been noticed. We're all about growth and trying to manage our success at the moment. We are getting rave reviews." Ocado will be profitable in five years time, he said.
Ocado has over 30,000 registered customers and a catchment area of 2.1 million homes serviced by 500 staff, Whiteside added. It has outsourced its call centre, awarding a contract to Cork-based Merchants. "The outsourced team has the same powers of delivery as we do."
