Ocado customers will no longer get a free copy of The Times after News International decided to cut its bulk distribution of papers.

Ocado said the contact had come to an end and both companies had agreed not to renew the deal. A spokesman for the reailer claimed it was good news for the environment.

“The move complement The Times’ current strategic position on bulk deals and massively supported Ocado’s green objectives for 2010, not least as a member of the 10:10 climate change campaign,” he said.

“The ending of distribution will have a hugely positive impact in terms of the weight and efficiency of our vans. We are focused, as ever, on the evolution of our green credentials.”

Ocado said it was offering customers a short-term trial of The Times’ e-paper as a temporary replacement and was in discussions with the newspaper about a future partnership.
