Whole organic pineapples are now being sold at Tesco in a first for a UK supermarket.
The pineapples come from the south of Togo, where they are grown in areas from the mountains to the coastal plains by family growers, each managing a small unit of about two hectares.
This has brought new benefits for growers accustomed to supplying local markets, said Tesco. Each is supported by an agronomist to ensure every fruit is of the condition and quality expected by shoppers.
Because organic pineapples are not artificially ripened, the Cayenne pineapples are green with some gold colouring at the base - but are ready to eat.
Priced at £2.99, they are now available nationwide in Tesco, which claims to be Britain’s leading organic supermarket.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “This innovation comes as organic sales continue to soar at our stores.
“Organic fruit and vegetables are dominating the market, with our organic fruit sales alone rising by one third over the past year. However, organic meat and poultry are also enjoying unprecedented growth in sales.”
