Tesco has announced it will pay staff a 10% bonus over the Christmas period, saying it wanted to reward them for facing “the most challenging circumstances” of the Covid pandemic and the festive season.
The bonus for permanent colleagues will apply across stores, distribution centres, customer fulfillment centres and customer engagement centres.
For Tesco’s hourly-paid colleagues this will be a 10% bonus on actual hours worked and for frontline managers, it will be a 10% bonus on salary for weeks worked.
The retailer said store colleagues would receive the bonus for hours worked between 13 December 2020 and 9 January 2021.
Temporary colleagues will also be eligible for the scheme if they joined the company on or before 1 September 2020.
Tesco has also told staff that they will not receive Christmas staff vouchers, as in previous years.
The bonus will also apply to staff in in Ireland and Central Europe.
The news follows a 10% bonus awarded by Tesco in the first lockdown, for hours worked between 9 March and 30 May.
“The hard work, dedication and resilience that colleagues have shown over the last few months has been remarkable,” said Tesco UK CEO Jason Tarry.
“This year has proven challenging and uncertain for so many of us and this bonus is a way of saying thank you for the incredible response of our colleagues to these challenges. We’re also giving colleagues an extended 20% discount on their shopping in the run-up to Christmas, to help bring some extra festive cheer.”
