Marks and Spencer has appointed former Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King as non-executive director starting from 1 January.
The appointment is the latest step in M&S’s creation of a ‘very strong transformation board’, the retailer said in a statement.
Before leading Sainsbury’s over 10 years, King was a pioneer of Simply Food at M&S and before that part of the leadership team responsible for the turnaround of Asda, the statement said.
“I am delighted that Justin has agreed to join us,” said M&S chief executive Steve Rowe. “As we navigate the challenges ahead it will be enormously helpful to have his experience, wisdom and insight on the board. Many colleagues remember his time at M&S and will warmly welcome him back.”
M&S chairman Archie Norman said: “Justin’s appointment completes a very significant reorientation of the board in the last year. He will be a great addition to a strong team.”
King said: “Having worked there 15 years ago, M&S has a very special place in my affections. I look forward to joining the board and supporting Steve in the turnaround that he is leading.”
King would continue to serve as vice chairman of Terra Firma and on the Public Interest Body of PwC, M&S said.
