Veganuary broke all previous records for sign-ups in the 2023 campaign, the organisation has said.
It attracted 706,965 official participants this year from nearly every country in the world, excluding only Vatican City and North Korea.
In the 10th year the campaign has taken place, the campaign said official sign-ups were likely “just the tip of the iceberg” with total participation in the challenge significantly larger.
A YouGov survey commissioned by the organisation found 4% of UK respondents reported participating in Veganuary during the month, and a 2022 poll found 9% of Brits had participated in Veganuary since the campaign began in 2014.
Veganuary’s social media presence also continued to grow, with #Veganuary viewed on TikTok more than 894 million times and over 300 million people engaging with Veganuary’s international social media channels in January 2023.
“The impact our food choices have on the planet is getting harder to ignore, and it’s very inspiring to see so many people around the world starting the new year by taking action,” said Veganuary’s head of communications Toni Vernelli.
“Attitudes towards veganism are changing, and Veganuary’s ‘give it a go for a month and see what you think’ approach has undoubtedly played an instrumental role in this shift, offering a non-judgmental way for businesses and individuals alike to explore a transition towards plant-based,” she added.
Veganuary launched in the UK in 2014, with offices opening in the US, Germany and Chile in 2019, Argentina and Brazil in 2020 and India in 2021.
The organisation also holds official campaigns in Italy, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, Singapore and Mexico in collaboration with local organisations. By 2027, Veganuary aims to have expanded into a further 10 countries.
Celebrities have continued to be involved in the campaign, with Peter Andre and TV comic actor Diane Morgan, aka Philomena Cunk, among others involved this year.
Previous participants include Brian May, Chris Packham and Deborah Meaden, all of whom continue to support the organisation.
