Premier Foods is to close six factories as part of a review of its manufacturing operations following its £1.2bn acquisition of RHM in December.
The food manufacturer said it would close six factories in Bristol, Droylsden, Ledbury, Middlewich, Reading and Wythenshawe by early 2009.
Production of dry food would be carried out at its Worksop, Knighton and Ashford sites, while preserve and spreads production would take place at Histon.
Production of chutneys, pastes and cooking sauces is set to move to Bury St Edmunds, and foodservice desserts to Knighton.
Reports suggest between 580 and 900 jobs will be lost as a result of the closures. A consultation has started with staff.
“These proposals will enable us to enhance our efficiency while giving us the capability to drive our branded sales growth,” said Premier Foods CEO Robert Schofield.
“Our proposals include significant investment in five of our sites while six will close,” he added.
