The White Stuff milk campaign is heading for the rocks after processors said they couldn't justify the expense. The Dairy Industry Federation said members had decided not to renew their funding, blaming tough market conditions and competing pressures for funds. Just days before the announcement, Robert Wiseman Dairies hinted the campaign could flounder as competitors were not willing to put their hands in their pockets. MD Robert Wiseman said: "I share the farming industry's view a generic campaign to promote the nutritional benefits of milk is important. However, I will not provide funding for a campaign which serves to benefit processing companies who cannot find it within themselves to contribute." NFU milk and dairy produce committee chairman Terrig Morgan claimed the campaign had already boosted consumption by 82m litres since its inception: "Some producers will view the decision as a reflection of the trade's attitude towards dairy farmers." The union is working with the Milk Development Council to explore other ways of boosting consumption through tie ups with retailers, school milk bars and bodies such as the Cheese Council. {{NEWS }}
