Doug Hall, multiples controller at SHS Sales & Marketing, on T Rex, Bruce Willis, apricots and hedgehogs
What was your first job? Cleaner in a shoe factory.
What did you want to be when you were a kid? Ski instructor.
What was the first music single you bought? Telegram Sam by T Rex. Two verses and a repetitive chorus; not good.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I have a strong team, challenging customers and a diverse mix of product sectors, so no two days are ever the same.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Working hard to build business with customers that not only rewards the consumer but our brand owners as well. It's very satisfying when you can see the results in the store.
What is the least rewarding part? Admin. IT has improved and helped this over time but I still wish I had an elf who could do it while I sleep.
If you could change one thing in the grocery what would it be? The shelf life of a buyer! It would be good to see consistency in personnel within this area of retail. It would benefit both the retailer and the sales team to build and maintain relationships. It sometimes feels like we are doing business in a revolving door.
Where do you hope to be in five years? Still at SHS, making a valuable contribution to the company, and still helping brands build their business. With this industry, who knows what brands will have emerged?
If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? A company motorbike. I have a hidden 'petrol head' side to me.
What is your motto in life? Look for and play to people's strengths.
What do you like to do outside work? Thanks to the Caravan charity rides I am now hooked on cycling and in training for the London to Paris bike ride.
What's your nickname? On the football pitch, Duracell.
What's your favourite movie? Armageddon. Dealing with adversity is very entertaining and Bruce Willis makes being bald look good.
Do you have any phobias? I cannot stand apricots.
Which celebrity would you pick to join your staff? Sir Chris Hoy. He could teach us about excellence, preparation and competitive edge.
What would you request as your final meal? Something from my local Indian in Cheddar (the town!)
What luxury would you have on your desert island? A fine malt whisky.
What animal best reflects your personality? Hedgehog. Prickly on the outside, soft on the inside.
