What's been keeping you busy? We have just reopened the store after an extensive refit and enlargement programme, which has lasted for a total of 32 weeks. It's been a pretty major challenge, as the majority of the work was done while the store was open, meaning the team had to work extra hard to maintain service levels and availability, but the end result is breathtaking and our customers are thrilled. We spent a huge amount of time conducting in-store questionnaires to find out exactly what our customers wanted and now we are reaping the rewards with more customers and larger trolleys.

Which changes are you most proud of? In my opinion, the best thing about this store is just how easy we have made it to shop. It's incredibly large but we have spent a vast amount of time and money perfecting the layout in order for people to move around it quickly and efficiently. I am also really thrilled with our six new self-scan pod checkouts, which are really helping to speed up the whole process of people getting out of the store quickly.

When did you join Sainsbury's?

I started at just 17 as a trainee manager and have been here ever since! I have been a manager for 10 years but only joined this store six months ago, after working as a regional operations manager for a short while. It's great to be back on the shop floor again.

What attracted you to the retail sector? I have always loved a challenge- and managing a store of this size is certainly that. I was also attracted by the promise of a fast-paced and ever-changing working environment.

What is the hardest thing about your job? There are hundreds of little challenges that come with managing a store of this size. Maintaining availability and customer service are the two most pertinent ones, but managing a workforce of more than 500 also has its issues! It's not particularly hard, it's just that some days you have many more things to deal with than others - but at the same time that's what makes it so interesting.
