What is your greatest challenge and how do you tackle it?
The geographic area we are based in means we have a high labour turnover. This means the challenges are keeping standards high and checking staff and customers are happy because that is our main goal. We achieve it through good management skills and getting to know all our staff and what makes them tick. We also know a lot of our regular customers and we do our best to respond to any feedback we get from them.
What makes the store so successful?
We have a good team in terms of management and staff. Despite the area's high labour turnover, we have managed to get it stable. It is all about team work - one person can't run this store without the help of the other 400 staff members. Each person has a role to play and knows what is expected of them.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy football and support Bradford City. Well, someone has to. I also have a five-year-old son who manages to keep me busy.
What is the best thing about being a store manager?
The best thing is getting on the shop floor and meeting our customers. I like chatting to staff as well as customers - it's what makes me tick.
What are your plans for the store?
Almost two years ago we had an entire refit, which took nearly a year to complete. The store was literally started again from scratch with all new fixtures and fittings and the whole store was jazzed up. The aisles were widened and the feedback we got from customers was really positive. Now we're just rolling out new lines such as the Eat Smart range and concentrating on building momentum with that.
How did you get into retail?
I left school at the age of 16 and started working at Morrisons. I stayed there for about three years then got married and worked within the family. That didn't work out and I was lucky enough to come back to Morrisons.
