Sainsbury’s has recruited its 1,000th worker through a partnership scheme with Remploy. The retailer has been working with Remploy, which helps find work for people with a range of physical, sensory and mental disabilities and other disadvantages, since 2006 and last year employed 574 people through the scheme.
The 1,000th worker, Jackie Walsh, had been unemployed for 18 months before joining Sainsbury’s.
“After I left my previous role I struggled to get work so when I was offered the role at Sainsbury’s I leapt at the chance,” she said.
“Everyone has been so supportive and I really enjoy working here. I hope that even more organisations will follow Sainsbury’s example to see the difference Remploy candidates can make to their workforce.”
Sainsbury’s customer service and colleague director Gwyn Burr added: “The colleagues we have recruited via Remploy are all passionate about delivering great service to our customers and working as part of a team, something that is crucial in retail. To get to this milestone is a great achievement and I look forward to working closely with Remploy in the future to help even more candidates find work.”
Sainsbury’s partnership with Remploy is part of its wider You Can initiative, designed to help people back into the workplace and give the retailer’s existing staff support, training and skills.
Remploy works with more than 2,500 companies, including Asda and Marks & Spencer and found jobs for more than 20,000 people last year.
