Name: Michelle Moody
Job title: HR manager
Company: TSC Foods
Sales: £40m
HQ: Scunthorpe
Number of employees: 359
What's it like to work for your company? Overall, TSC is a very fast-paced business. We have a lot going on between our retail and foodservice offer and the launch of a new brand last year. The feedback I get a lot is that everyone really enjoys the atmosphere and energy, and the people they work with right up to director level. There is an open door policy and everyone is treated exactly the same. Our head office is on site and all senior management are located in the same office as the actual factory, which makes for an open, happy culture encouraging honest communication.
Why is it a good employer? TSC is a sustainable and growing business within the local area we're deemed to be one of the highest-paying employers. We aim to be in the top end of pay and benefits, and offer a pension scheme and discounted membership of a local gym.
What's the best thing about working there? The people. Although in our factory the staff spend long hours (12 straight) on the floor, the overall feedback is that they enjoy themselves.
How does the company differ from its rivals? We are serious about high-quality food, rather than using or producing a generic product at x margin. We all want to produce food that everyone is proud of. Even the machine minders take the products personally.
What's the training like and what qualifications can I earn? We provide initial on-the-job training and dependent on where the employee wants to progress and develop, they can go on to different level of degrees up to Masters with our support.
Has the company won any awards? Yes, TSC won the 2010 Economic Business of the Year Awards in the Northern Area. Our new range of Glorious! soups won awards last year.
What's your proudest achievement of the past 12 months? Probably the launch of our new range of Glorious! soups, which has been a significant driver of growth within TSC. We have seen sales triple since the launch in May 2010. Our foodservice area is also growing, which is testament to TSC as this is generally a sector in decline. We are constantly innovating in foodservice and through the recession we continued to find new opportunities for growth.
What tips would you offer jobseekers? For production roles, they need to get to know our business a bit and what we do. At a higher level, we look at the behavioural characteristics as well as experience.
Are you working on anything exciting right now? We are continuing to grow our successful range of Glorious! soups and sauces in 2011, from new flavours to new pack formats like the single portion pot, which may lead to needing more staff. Another fantastic innovation we are developing is sous vide for our foodservice offering.
