Proof that a small company can shake up the market

Kate Lucas, commercial manager for Gü Chocolate Puds, says that she has found her perfect job working with chocolate. "It really is my dream job," says Lucas, who previously worked for four and a half years at Lactalis in a number of roles, including national account manager and supply chain analyst.

Lucas says that since joining Gü in August 2004, no day has been the same and she relishes the variety of her role. It is spread across a number of functions including NPD, supply chain, marketing and sales, so in a typical week she works on a number of projects.

One of the key elements of her role at Gü is the development of new products. She is involved in getting new products to market and developing products right through from creation and execution through to launch.

Lucas meets Gü's development chefs once a week for tastings and to discuss new ideas.

She also recently worked on the launch of Gü's brownies in Waitrose in February this year, which are currently being rolled out rapidly to other accounts.

"We have a few launches planned in the next few months," she says. "We are not just resting in chilled but are also considering ambient and there is potential for frozen. We have so much more to do."

Lucas is also responsible for a number of Gü's accounts, including Waitrose, The Co-operative Group, Asda, Somerfield, Budgens, Booths, Makro and Ocado.

She also helped Gü set up a business in Belgium in November last year, which she visits at least once a week.

"We are still a young company with fantastic growth of 95% year-on-year," says Lucas. "We are very serious about food but we are a fun and quirky company.

"It's a fantastic brand which proves that a small company such as us can really challenge the marketplace."
