Waitrose isn’t going to let the weight of the cost of living crisis crush a plentiful, opulent Christmas. The retailer is preparing for shoppers to pick up multiple meaty main courses, patisserie-inspired desserts and booze-drenched sides aplenty. Here’s our pick of what Waitrose will have in store this Christmas
Main courses
Heston from Waitrose Festive Peking Duck
Rsp: £40/1.63kg
If you hadn’t already guessed from the name of his restaurant, Waitrose partner chef Heston Blumenthal is a fan of ducks. The chef’s predilection for the Peking variety in particular has inspired the addition of this new Christmas table centrepiece. A partly deboned British duck is rubbed with aromatic festive spices, slathered with a mulled wine hoisin glaze and sold with a crisp duck crackling for sprinkling on top.
Treacle Cure Bone-in Gammon
Rsp: £25/1.9kg
This treacle-cured, outdoor-bred ham is slow-cooked for 10 hours with warming Christmas spices before being topped with a black treacle glaze.
Vegan Jewelled Roast with a Fruity Centre
Rsp: £5.99
Let’s face it, meat alternatives aren’t always the most appetising to look at. The glistening fruity garnish topping on this main aims to make the plant-based option just as visually appealing as the meatier dishes on the table this year. It’s a savoury mushroom-based roast featuring caramelised onions, chestnuts, a clove-spiced centre and the topping stars apricots, cranberries, chestnuts and pine nuts. It’s one of 20 new plant-based products hitting shelves this Christmas.
Sides
British Pork Jewelled Stuffing Wreath
Rsp: £12/694g
Continuing the opulent jewelled theme, this stuffing wreath is studded with candied clementine, cranberries and blood orange.
Three Bird Pigs in Blankets
Rsp: £10/12
We’ve seen so much innovation in pigs in blankets that it’s no surprise that poultry has now muscled in on the action. In the Heston from Waitrose range, dry-cured treacle bacon wraps a chicken, pheasant, duck and pork chipolata, flavoured with Seville orange, marmalade and festive spices.
No.1 Brussels Sprout Truffle Gratin
Rsp: £3.75/400g
The dream product for those people who struggle to eat their sprouts, this gratin combines them with cauliflower, leeks and a truffle flavoured sauce.
Party Food and Deli
‘Nduja and Burrata Profiteroles
Rsp: £6/335g
Ever wished profiteroles were savoury? This one’s for you. Choux pastry is stuffed with spicy ’nduja sausage and a blend of burrata, cheddar and mozzarella.
Vegan 10 Mini No Beef Empanadas
Rsp: £5.50/220g
Another one of the 20 new vegan lines, these mini Spanish-style pastries are filled with soya mince, red pepper and carrot and spiced with warming black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, chilli and turmeric.
No.1 Three-Bird Layered Pork Pie
Rsp: £15/850g
Sitting pretty on Waitrose deli counters during the festive season, the pork pie is given a Christmas makeover with the addition of pheasant, turkey and duck liver pâté, hand-finished with port jelly.
Desserts and confectionery
Parmesan & Cracked Black Pepper Panettone
Rsp: £10/750g
Waitrose says this savoury approach to a panettone has never been done by a supermarket before. The addition of black pepper and parmesan has reinvented this Italian cake to be a charcuterie accompaniment, vessel for pâté or a base for an avocado and poached egg brunch.
No.1 Blood Orange & White Chocolate Quenelle
Rsp: £16/750g
Inspired by the delicate treats in the windows of French patisseries, this pudding comprises an intricately shaped Belgian white chocolate and blood orange mousse, a mandarin compote centre and a chocolate biscuit and cranberry base. If all that wasn’t enough, it also shimmers.
Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Pennies
Rsp: £6/78g
In what is possibly its most on-brand move yet, Waitrose has decided to posh up chocolate coins. They’re made with 65% Dominican Republic single origin dark chocolate and Fairtrade cocoa, and they’re stuffed with gianduja praline. Waitrose says its new pennies can be enjoyed by all the family, while grown-ups can plop one in their glass of mulled wine.
