Marks & Spencer’s Easter range reflects growing consumer appetite for loaded and layered eggs, a trend driven in large part by social media.

The retailer is launching products like the Dippy Whippy Loaded Egg and the Scrummy Bunny Munch Loaded Egg. It’s a move that taps into the rising popularity of smaller, ‘self-eat’ treats, which played a key role in driving early-season category growth last year. According to NIQ, novelty items like chocolate bunnies and filled eggs saw value sales spike 20.1% on volumes up 7.1% in the run-up to Easter 2024.

Premiumisation is also key to M&S’s strategy this year. It is introducing its thickest-ever eggs, like the Collection Extra Thick Pistachio and Milk Chocolate Egg and the Collection Extra Thick Dark Chocolate and Blond Egg, reflecting a wider push for more indulgent gifting options. Shell eggs, which accounted for over 54% of Easter confectionery sales last year, saw 11.1% value growth on volumes up 1.6% [NIQ 12 w/e 31 March 2024].
